Before I started my company I supported survivors of abuse for over 7 years – all genders and ages. Whilst supporting survivors it became apparent just how many people don’t understand the impact of sexual violence/abuse and how many opportunities to support and create safety for people are missed. Many people often only consider the immediate harm of hurt and fear – not the long-lasting effects that all incidents of sexual violence and abuse can cause.
All too often people avoid the conversation, especially when it relates to children who are abused.
We must do better to make a world that is safe for the people who have already experienced abuse/violence to feel able to speak their truth and we must prevent it from happening to others.
Child survivors become adults and adults need support too. I started my company Thrive Safe to try and help. I support businesses, organisations, and education providers to improve their response to people with mental health needs, especially those who are abuse survivors.
I believe the first step in creating a safer world is by improving education – not just what abuse is but the effects of it and how to support people better.
